Will it break? Can I fix it?

Will it break? Can I fix it?

I just had a thought. How true to life will the game be, as far as ships, buildings, etc? What I mean is, will players be expected to perform regular maintance on a ship to keep it running efficiently? Can a community (town) deteriorate if there is no upkeep?  Will my dog die if I don't feed it? Wink

The reason I ask is, I'm working on a "ghetto" space station...starting out, the doors to the main hanger bay will be stuck open.  Will it be possible for a character, with a certain skill, to repair the doors and get them to open and close?

If the doors are stuck open, does that not indicate pervasive vacuum?

    Your original questions in order:

    1. Hard to say.

    2. That or pay someone else to do it.

    3. Yes.

    4. Yes.

Ben and I were treating the main hanger like a big garage...ships move in...dock, softseal or whatever...then access walkthrough.  Sort of like how people get on to planes via the bridge walkway.  This way...people are sheltered from the vacuum.  Does that make sense?

If that's not the way to go, let me know so I can revise.

I just have to ask (thanks for answering the questions btw).  I get the no sci-fi thing.  But...how would one service something as complex as a space station without a solution to work in a vacuum?  Is the plan to avoid issues like this by simply making it impossible in the game?  Ex. Hinge on an exterior door fails or communications antenna is grazed by passing ship and is knocked off.  Are things like that just not going to happen?  Does that kind of detail need to be considered?

Just curious and eager to understand.  Thanks!

Service vehicles.  Clunky mechanically-controlled arms with magnets and claws on them, etc.  Or repair from within.  Or the sections are designed to not require exterior repair. Deployable aspects like the solar sails need to be retractable within the space station for repair and service... large vessels may have similar facilities in order to allow them to service themselves without docking in a pressurized bay in order to repair them.  Still don't need spacesuits.
