The Kronecker Delta

Warhammer Online

So... I'm not sure who this guys is, but apparently someone involved in the development of Warhammer Online.  He seems to me to be an idiot.  Very possibly the antithesis of the Faith player?  His vision:  'Everyone fights everyone forever'.  Nice..

Yeah, the retarded thing about "war forever" is that, ultimately, it amounts to nothing. If it never stops, then it means no one wins. Who wants to fight a war you can't win?

But I must say, he has a point about immersion Stick out tongue [:P]

wow...
"the great big orc king... he's desparate to just destroy all stunties, and take away all their homeland. not because he thinks it's a good idea, but because it gives him an excuse to fight. whereas the dwarves racial arc is to push the greenskins back, and reclaim their land... 'cause they're dwarves."

i think i'm actually dumber after listening to that.

the whole idea of this game is that people just fight all the time?
how boring.

it seems that this guy knows NOTHING about MMOs.
he says it's not about immersion, but rather imagination...

immersion is NOT failing to realize your wife left you. and imagination is not drawing pictures and wearing t-shirts based on the game.

immersion is believing in the fictional world of the game.
i can't believe in a world when the only motivation behind all it's characters is "they just want to fight".

To be fair though, the premise behind all of the GW tabletop war games is this same thing.

Orcs all want to dominate the entie landscape doing nothing but conquest. Chaos wants to wreak as much havoc and ...uhhh....chaos as possible to appease their twisted gods. Dwarves want to reaquire their homelands and return to their roots. Elves want to not die. :) Etc. Ect. Ect.

The MMO version is to perpetuate this model from an individual standpoint based on a game of units and armies. Not an easy thing to do, and I think they have some great ideas. I myself am looking forward to the game, and plan to try it out. Not being a fan of endless combat though , I think it will be a stress-relief, mindless killing sort of excursion. :)

I'm sure there will be plenty of people who play it, Arashi... I just thought that the guy in the video made it seem like the game was being driven with no plot or 'realistic' rationalization.  Honestly, when I play an RTS, I generally don't care about plot... missions where I have to 'gather 1000 wood' or 'build a lumber mill' for my main mission goals are just training for the 'defeat your enemy' missions.  And the vast majority of the time, when I play RTS, I just play 'crush your enemies'.  So... it makes sense for WHO to be like that... but... I was surprised at how much the guy didn't even try to pretend that there was more thought behind the plot.  In retrospect I probably shouldn't have been surprised... it was just a glaring difference between the supposed work that we're doing on Faith.

I agree Gith (and the moniker is WAR :) ). Keep in mind this is based off of tabletop miniatures gaming and not an RTS, so there is no resource gathering or troop building involved. You have you army point totals, field the best army you can with the points you have, and play the scenario or just beat the crap out of each other. So, again it is appropriate (not that you were saying it wasn't).

It is indeed a glaring difference, and one I think the entire development team is proud to have! :)
